There are lots of care services available and many organisations who can provide them.
When choosing a care service for yourself or a loved one, you want to make sure you are making the right decision. When looking for a care provider, you might want to consider the following points.
Types of care
There are different types of care available, which are suited to different needs. Some care can be delivered in your home but other services are delivered in specialist facilities.
Some questions to consider are:
- How often you need care
- What things you need help with
- What times of day you need care
- Whether you wish to receive care in your own home
- What things you would like your care to help you achieve
You can also contact your local council’s social services department, who can make an assessment of your needs.
Finding a provider
Once you know what sort of care you are looking for, you can start researching providers. If you know someone who is already receiving care services, you might want to ask them for a recommendation.
There are several websites that allow you to search a directory of care providers. You can say what sort of service you are looking for and where:
- Care Quality Commission
- NHS Choices service directory
- Which? care services directory
- United Kingdom Homecare Association
Standards of care
Everyone receiving care services should be able to expect a good service from their care provider. People should be kept safe and treated with dignity. Their wishes should be respected at all times.
The standards for care services are regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). CQC inspects all health and social care providers to make sure they are giving a good level of service. You can search the CQC website for its inspection reports of care providers.
