A major initiative to improve energy efficiency in homes for vulnerable people is set to get underway, thanks to a partnership between Transform Housing & Support and WPS – the property services division of Wates.
The project will see energy efficiency upgrades carried out on 100 properties helping to create warmer, more sustainable homes while reducing energy consumption for residents.
As a supported housing provider and charity, Transform supports homeless and vulnerable people across Surrey and surrounding areas, providing safe accommodation and crucial support to enable nearly 2,000 people each year to thrive and live independently.
Backed by over £1 million in Government funding from the Warm Homes: Social Housing Fund, the project aims to bring properties up to a C rating on the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) scale.
The three-year programme, known as Transform’s ‘Warm Homes Project: Affordable Warmth through Sustainable Solutions,’ will introduce measures designed to boost warmth and lower fuel costs. These include external and cavity wall insulation, as well as low-carbon heating solutions such as air source heat pumps and solar panels.
Transform’s Director of Asset Management, Decarbonisation and Growth, Richard Hamer, emphasised the dual benefits of the scheme, which has a total co-investment of over £2 million:
Decarbonising our properties is a win-win for Transform clients and the planet. The project will help to reduce fuel poverty for our clients by creating warmer and more thermally efficient homes while also tackling the climate emergency. We are very much looking forward to working with WPS as we set-off on this journey together.
David Morgan, Executive Managing Director for WPS, highlighted the importance of engaging with residents throughout the process:
We are incredibly proud to partner with Transform to support their decarbonisation. What really sets this project apart is the expert resident liaison required. We are working closely with Transform to ensure their tenants – many of whom face challenges such as physical and learning disabilities, trauma, or mental health issues – understand the work being done and the benefits it will bring for them.
This project will not only help Transform manage their housing stock more sustainably but also provide warmer, more energy-efficient homes for their clients – at a time when they need it most.
Work on the scheme will begin this summer and is expected to be completed during 2028
